How ALX Africa built a culture of purpose-driven wellbeing across a high-performing, people-first organisation

A connected platform supporting movement, mental health, and community across a mission-driven workforce.
ALX Africa

Supporting wellbeing at the heart of a mission-driven organisation

ALX Africa is one of the continent's leading talent development organisations, equipping Africa's next generation of leaders with the skills, mindset, and community to thrive in a rapidly changing world. With a workforce that is deeply invested in human potential, supporting employee wellbeing is not simply a benefit - it is a natural extension of the organisation's core values.

As ALX Africa's team grew and the demands on its people increased, leadership recognised the need for a wellbeing solution that matched the energy and ambition of its workforce. The goal was to create a single, connected experience that supported movement, mental health, and everyday habits - and that would genuinely resonate with a purpose-driven team.

To achieve this, ALX Africa partnered with Strove to deliver a wellbeing platform that brings together physical activity, mental health support, and community engagement. Today, Strove sits at the centre of how ALX Africa looks after its people.

The challenge

ALX Africa needed a wellbeing solution that could keep pace with a highly engaged, achievement-oriented workforce - without creating yet another initiative that goes unused.

The key challenges were:

  • Providing meaningful support across physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing
  • Creating community and connection through shared health experiences
  • Giving leadership visibility into employee wellbeing trends and programme impact

They needed a platform employees would genuinely embrace, and one that could demonstrate real, measurable value.

Why Strove

Strove stood out for its ability to bring together multiple dimensions of wellbeing into a single, seamless experience - one that felt less like a corporate wellness tool and more like a personal health companion.

With Strove, ALX Africa was able to:

  • Drive participation through challenges, gamification, and community leaderboards
  • Provide access to Talk, connecting employees with coaches, counsellors, and psychologists
  • Enable consistent healthy habits through activity and sleep tracking
  • Build team culture through group challenges and shared milestones
  • Gain leadership visibility through reporting and wellbeing insights

The result was a platform that employees actively sought out - one that brought both energy and accountability to the team's collective wellbeing journey.

The rollout

Strove was rolled out across the ALX Africa team with a focus on making adoption feel simple and compelling from the very start. Employees joined via email invite and were onboarded through awareness sessions designed to get people engaged quickly.

Through Strove, employees can:

  • Track movement, steps, and sleep automatically
  • Join company-wide challenges and connect with colleagues
  • Build healthy habits through daily actions and goal-setting
  • Access meditation and mindfulness content
  • Connect with coaches and mental health professionals via Talk
  • Earn points and redeem rewards aligned with their lifestyle

A standout moment in the rollout was the April 2026 Steps Challenge - a team-wide movement campaign with 10,000 Strove coins up for grabs for top performers and leading teams. The challenge drew in 97 staff members and generated genuine excitement and camaraderie across the team. Employees checked in weekly, tracked each other's progress, and pushed one another to move more. That kind of organic energy is rare, and it set a strong tone for the wellbeing culture that followed.

The impact

Strove has helped ALX Africa build a more consistent, connected, and measurable approach to employee wellbeing.

This has translated into meaningful daily behaviour:

  • 61  average active minutes per member per day
  • 5,000  average steps per member per day
  • 7.0  hours average sleep per night

At scale, this has resulted in:

  • 64,270 km of activity tracked over one year
  • 187 million total steps logged to date - approximately 493,000 steps per member annually

Engagement has remained strong across challenges:

  • 143 active challenges participated in
  • 349 Gold tiers achieved

Mental wellbeing support has seen steady and meaningful adoption:

  • 152 Talk sessions booked over 12 months
  • Consistent monthly uptake of professional coaching and counselling

Beyond the numbers, the most significant shift has been in how employees experience and talk about their wellbeing.

For some, Strove has become a personal accountability tool that supports elite-level ambition:

"Strove keeps me motivated to stay active and consistent with my training. It's become a simple way to hold myself accountable and keep my momentum going. This year, wellbeing has meant creating balance - not just training hard, but taking care of my overall lifestyle. I managed to complete four ultra-marathons this year, and now I'm working towards my next big goal: running a 100-mile race in 2026."

— Kwazi Mthembu, Programme Manager: Data Engineering, ALX Africa

For others, the value lies in Strove's ability to hold everything in one place:

"What Strove has done really well is integrating physical, mental, emotional, and nutritional wellbeing on one platform. You can talk to really great professionals, whilst tracking how your exercise, sleep, and food journey is going - and still earn points for it."

— Munesu Manyangarirwa, Data Scientist, ALX Africa

From a leadership perspective, Strove has strengthened both the visibility and confidence in ALX Africa's wellbeing strategy:

"Strove has become a really valuable part of how we look after our team at ALX. It gives us a pulse on how people are moving and taking care of their physical health, and more than that, it gives us a way to actively encourage movement and build community around it. Our recent steps challenge brought in 97 of our staff and the energy it created across the team was genuinely special. People looked forward to checking in each week and pushing each other on, and that kind of momentum is hard to manufacture."

— Samir Khan, Leadership Development Specialist, ALX Africa

What comes next

ALX Africa's wellbeing journey continues to build, and the ambition is growing. The focus ahead is on deepening the impact of Talk, ensuring more employees have access to the professional mental health support they need, and continuing to raise the bar on what a challenge campaign can look and feel like.

There is also a clear opportunity to increase activation across the wider team - bringing more members into the Strove experience and ensuring wellbeing is felt not just by the already-engaged, but by every person in the organisation.

For a business whose entire purpose is unlocking human potential, investing in the wellbeing of its own people is not a side project. It is the foundation and Strove is proud to be part of building it.
