Introducing Health Mirror: Strove’s new camera-based health check feature

Jarrad Van Zuydam

Most of us have become very good at tracking parts of our lives.

We know how many steps we took yesterday. We know when our phone battery is running low. Some of us know our sleep score, training load, resting heart rate, and how many unread emails are quietly raising our stress levels.

But when it comes to the basic signals our body gives us every day, many people still only check in when something feels wrong.

That is the gap Health Mirror is designed to help close.

Health Mirror is Strove’s new camera-based health check feature. It gives users a simple way to perform a guided wellness scan using their phone camera, helping them understand selected health metrics and build better awareness of their body over time.

This feature is not a replacement for a regular check-up with a professional. Instead, think of it as a tool for daily perspective, providing a quick, frictionless way to stay curious and informed about what your body needs on any given day.

What is Health Mirror?

Health Mirror is a wellness feature inside the Strove app that uses a quick, 30-second phone selfie to estimate selected health metrics and translate them into practical wellbeing insights.

The feature relies on advanced optical technology that detects microscopic changes in skin colour right beneath the surface of your face as blood flows through it. It translates these subtle signals into meaningful data, turning your smartphone camera into a convenient window into your wellness.

Users can access it by opening the Strove app, tapping the “+” button, and selecting “Perform health check”. The scan is fast, entirely guided, and designed to be repeated regularly.

The feature provides insights into the following metrics:

  • Resting heart rate
  • Heart rate variability (HRV)
  • Respiratory rate
  • Estimated blood pressure
  • Hypertension risk

For users, it creates a simple moment of self-awareness. For organisations, it adds a practical layer to preventive health by helping employees or members engage more actively with their wellbeing.

How Health Mirror works

Health Mirror starts with context.

Before performing a scan, users complete a short pre-scan survey to make the results more meaningful. Height and weight help estimate BMI, while medical history helps personalise insights. Risk scores may use factors such as age, sex, smoking status, and family history.

This matters because health data is rarely useful in isolation. A number becomes more helpful when it is interpreted in relation to the person, their baseline, and their broader risk profile.

The scan itself takes less than a minute. Users simply place their phone on a stable surface at eye level, sit comfortably still, and let the app scan the face. Afterward, results are immediately viewable inside the Strove app.

Users can perform unlimited scans, making Health Mirror less of a once-off test and more of a regular check-in.

One scan can be interesting. Repeated scans can become informative.

What Health Mirror helps you understand

Health Mirror focuses on health signals that are familiar enough to be useful, but often underused in daily life.

  • Resting heart rate can reflect factors such as stress, fitness, caffeine, dehydration, illness, poor sleep, or recent activity.
  • Heart rate variability (HRV) can help users understand patterns related to stress, recovery, fatigue, alcohol, illness, and training load.
  • Estimated blood pressure gives users an indicative view of systolic and diastolic blood pressure, while hypertension risk helps frame longer-term risk by considering blood pressure alongside other lifestyle factors.

The goal is not to make people obsess over individual readings. The goal is to help them notice patterns.

A higher-than-usual resting heart rate after a poor night’s sleep may be useful feedback. A lower HRV after a stressful week may be a prompt to prioritise recovery. A repeatedly elevated blood pressure estimate may encourage someone to confirm their readings with a validated blood pressure cuff and seek appropriate advice.

Health Mirror helps turn invisible signals into visible prompts.

Why this matters for members

Most people already know the basics of good health.

Move more. Sleep better. Manage stress. Eat well. Drink less alcohol. Recover properly. Pay attention before small problems become bigger ones.

The hard part is not knowing. The hard part is noticing, acting, and staying engaged.

Health Mirror makes wellbeing more personal. Instead of only reading about why lifestyle habits matter, users can begin to see how these factors physically show up in their own data.

That kind of feedback can be powerful. It gives people a reason to pause and ask better questions:

  • How is my body responding to the last few days?
  • Is stress showing up physically?
  • Do I need to rest, hydrate, sleep, or seek help?

Health Mirror also connects with the broader Strove experience. Results feed into the Strove Score, helping users engage with their progress and potentially raise their rewards tier.

Because behaviour change is rarely driven by information alone, people need feedback, reinforcement, and a reason to keep going. Health Mirror adds another vital feedback loop.

Why this matters for organisations

For employers, insurers, brokers, and wellness buyers, Health Mirror strengthens the preventive health value of the Strove platform.

One of the biggest challenges in workplace wellbeing is not a lack of content. Most organisations already have access to articles, webinars, campaigns, and educational resources. The harder challenge is engagement.

  • How do you make health feel relevant before someone becomes unwell?
  • How do you help people notice risk earlier?
  • How do you move from generic wellness content to personalised health awareness?
  • How do you give employees a reason to return to a wellbeing platform regularly?

Health Mirror helps answer those questions.

It adds an interactive, low-friction health check to the Strove experience. It gives users a simple reason to open the app, check in with themselves, and understand their own health signals.

For organisations, that matters. Preventive health only works when people engage before a crisis. Health Mirror creates a practical moment of awareness that can fit seamlessly into the working day, support health literacy, and reinforce healthier decisions over time.

It is not another passive resource. It is a more active way to engage people in their wellbeing.

Privacy matters

A camera-based health feature naturally raises an important question: what happens to the video?

Health Mirror has been designed with privacy in mind.

The face video is processed securely in real-time and then permanently deleted. No photos or videos are stored after processing. Measurements are linked to a unique reference number rather than directly to the user’s name, and only pseudonymised measurement results are retained.

Your face is used for the scan. It is never stored. For any health technology feature to be trusted, privacy cannot be an afterthought. It has to be built into the experience from the start.

A wellness tool, not a diagnostic device

Health Mirror provides general wellbeing insights. It does not replace a doctor, nurse, clinical examination, validated medical equipment, or professional medical advice.

It should not be used to diagnose a condition, manage a disease, or serve as the sole basis for making medical decisions.

If a result is repeatedly unusual, it should be confirmed with appropriate clinical equipment. If someone has symptoms or feels concerned about their health, they should speak to a healthcare professional.

The right role for Health Mirror is to support awareness, not to replace care.

Tips for a perfect scan

To get the most accurate results from your 60-second check-in, keep this quick environmental checklist in mind:

  • Stability: Place your phone on a stable surface at eye level rather than holding it.
  • Lighting: Sit in a brightly lit room with even light across your face. Avoid harsh backlighting or heavy shadows.
  • Movement: Remain completely still, stay relaxed, and avoid talking or chewing during the scan.
  • Visibility: Ensure your face is fully uncovered by removing sunglasses or hats that obscure your features.

Preventive health should be easier

Preventive health often asks people to do a lot.

Book the appointment. Find the device. Make the time. Understand the numbers. Remember the advice. Change the behaviour. Sustain the habit. For busy people, that is a big ask.

Health Mirror lowers the friction. It puts a simple health check into the same app people already use for wellbeing, movement, rewards, and progress.

That does not mean every scan will reveal something important. Most will not, and that is fine. The value lies in building awareness over time.

Health is shaped by the small decisions we make repeatedly: how we sleep, move, recover, eat, work, train, hydrate, and manage stress. Health Mirror helps make some of those decisions more informed.

A simple scan will not tell the whole story of your health. But it can help you start paying attention.

Try Health Mirror in the Strove app

Health Mirror is now available inside the Strove app. To try it, open the app, tap the “+” button, and select “Perform health check”.

For organisations, Health Mirror adds a new layer of preventive health engagement to the Strove platform, helping employees and members move from passive wellbeing content to active health awareness.

Smarter health starts with noticing. Health Mirror makes that easier.
